The BMW S 1000 R has been awarded the prestigious 2014 Motorcycle of the Year award by Australia’s pre-eminent motorcycle publication, Australian Motorcycle News. The S 1000 R was pitted against the seven other finalists, including the R 1200 GS Adventure, over a two-week period of intensive evaluation. To top the testing off, the ‘magnificent seven’ were ridden together on the same roads in the same conditions. This gave the judging panel of experienced riders the opportunity to see how the standout motorcycles of the year performed in the real riding worlds in which owners will use them. The diverse collection of motorcycles was judged on five criteria with a score out of ten marked for each. The categories were as follows:• Meets design brief – how well does the bike fulfil its intended purpose?• Feature relevance – are the features of the bike genuinely useful for real world riders?• Value for money – how does it stack up in the fight for the wallets of potential riders?• Build quality – attention to detail, materials and finishing touches.• Design innovation – contribution to the future direction of motorcycles. The 118 kW/160 hp Roadster was the standout performer and impressed the AMCN judges in every one of the criteria. It received 43 points out of the available 50 – 3.3 points ahead of its nearest rival, the R 1200 GS Adventure.“BMW intended this to be the ultimate real-world performance road bike, with a maximum of technology delivered at minimum cost,” wrote AMCN. “On so many levels this is a shrewd and brilliantly executed model for BMW Motorrad. It is a bike which brings high-tech closer than ever to the mass motorcycle market. Far from being token gimmicky the electronically adjustable riding mode options on the S 1000 R can be understood and the benefits appreciated by even the most technically inept rider”.The win by the S 1000 R makes it four out of the last five years BMW Motorrad has received the top award. This impressive accolade comes as a result of the continuing cascade of new and dynamic models BMW Motorrad continues to bring to the riding public.“This is a fantastic result for BMW Motorrad. The S 1000 R is a stunning motorcycle that not only impressed the AMCN judges but is also delighting the ever growing list of riders who are choosing to ride naked bikes,” said Tony Sesto, BMW Motorrad Australia General Manager.“As we can see by the new models that will be hitting the streets in 2015, BMW Motorrad is not resting and will continue to captivate riders with technical and design innovation.”The S 1000 R has captured the imagination of riders around the world and this Australian Motorcycle of the Year award further adds to the international acclaim already handed out to this outstanding motorcycle.
