Imagine a ride from the Atlantic coast of Brazil, following the Amazon River west across South America all the way to its source up in the snow-capped volcanic peak of Nevado Mismi in the Peruvian Andes. For a ride like this, there’s only one bike that stands out as the obvious choice – the BMW GS – and right now, five riders from five countries are deep in the rainforest, putting it to the test…The lucky participants are Thierry Banchet from South Africa, Jean Cristophe Balasse from France, Guy Matthew from the UK and Chris Cowper from Australia. They are being led by Marcelo Leite from Brazil, an ‘around the world’ veteran who has travelled all five continents on two wheels.Having started in Curuçá in the state of Pará, northern Brazil, the riders are using identical BMW F 800 GS bikes for this historical 7,000 kilometre journey into the Amazon basin, where they will encounter different cultures, communities and plenty of wildlife deep in the rainforest. The group is being helped with logistical and technical support by BMW Motorrad Brazil, which is publicising the journey via its national Facebook page. According to Rafael Nogueira from the Motorrad Marketing department, the Amazon Roots journey is a ‘first’ on two wheels, as nobody has ever done this kind of trip before by motorcycle.“It’s true, they will be the first to ride the length of the Amazon solo, and so far the expedition is going well,” he says. “The F 800 GS bikes they are riding were chosen for this tough challenge because they each needed a versatile motorcycle that is good fun to ride and capable both on and off-road. The F 800 GS was the perfect choice because it is comfortable, easy to ride and extremely reliable. We have added an extra fuel tank because there won’t be many gas stations in many of the areas they will be travelling through!”Having started their ride where the largest river on earth meets the Atlantic Ocean, the group have already experienced many long days in the saddle, experiencing drought, rain, deep mud, dust, sand, dense forest, waterfalls, jungle, numerous ferry crossing, huge potholes in the roads, big logging trucks and their fair share of punctures along the way. It’s all part of an exciting adventure, which is being documented for a forthcoming book and film.
