Fascination, emotion, advanced technology and innovative design opened proceedings at the Intermot show in Cologne this morning, as BMW Motorrad's launched its new brand strategy - MAKE LIFE A RIDE - alongside a continued new model initiative.Introduced by President of BMW Motorrad Stephan Schaller, 'MAKE LIFE A RIDE' focuses on the people who ride the motorcycles, their emotions, their strong attitudes to life and their stories that help create the worldwide community of BMW riders. And it's this ever-growing community that is helping keep the brand right on track to achieve yet another record-breaking year. In the first nine months of the year, a growth rate of seven per cent means that more than 100,000 motorcycles and scooters have been supplied - the highest figure ever recorded at this point of the season.Constant innovation and growth aside, there were three important world premieres eagerly waiting to be unveiled in front of a packed stand of journalists, photographers and invited guests.First up was the new R 1200 R. Clearly more dynamic and expressive than its predecessor, the latest model is reduced to the essentials for purist roadster fans who want to see every component on display on this expressive motorcycle that offers guaranteed riding pleasure - whatever the conditions. Then it was the turn of Vice President BMW Motorrad Sales and Marketing, Heiner Faust, to introduce the all-new R 1200 RS sports boxer. It's 28 years since the first R 100 RS introduced the world to the concept of a BMW boxer with serious sporting potential, combined with excellent ergonomics, handling and weather protection for complete touring comfort. This latest RS (Reise Sport = Travel Sport) continues this proud tradition yet unlocks new and fascinating dimensions with its 125 hp liquid-cooled engine, relaxed seating position, perfect wind and weather protection and choice of riding modes. Expect the new RS to have wide-reaching appeal when it goes on sale next year. It won't hang around in dealers for long. Finally, the new S 1000 RR was unveiled at the Intermot. Fans and enthusiasts knew it was coming of course, but anticipation was high all the same. Introduced by Professor Dr. Karl-Victor Schaller, Head of Development, this third world premiere was what many sports bike and racing fanatics had come to Cologne to see. The original RR redefined the meaning of 'Supersport' when it was launched and this highly emotional product has since gained an impressive 22 per cent share in an extremely competitive market. But BMW Motorrad is a brand that never rests on its laurels and the latest version has moved the goalposts yet again, with even higher levels of power, safety and usability. Those who are lucky enough to ride the formidable new RR will feel all the changes instantly but even on paper the figures speak volumes. Output is now 199 bhp - an increase of 6 bhp - while max torque is now 130 nM. The overall weight figure has been shaved by 4 kg, making the new RR even more agile at just 204 kg fully fuelled - and including ABS of course. Naturally, all the control systems have been optimised and adjusted to offer better handling and an even more engaging riding experience. And last, but not least, a new exterior makes this ultimate sports bike instantly recognisable as the new-for-2015 RR.But it's more than just motorcycles that make up BMW Motorrad, as innovation in various rider equipment segments continue to play an important part in the brand's success story. For example, over 10,000 Rallye suits have been sold this year, as well as 50,000 helmets, putting BMW Motorrad among the top helmet retailers and reinforcing the brand's position as the only motorcycle manufacturer offering such a vast Aftersales portfolio. Unsurprisingly, there is a new rider equipment collection on its way, offering everything from lifestyle and leisure clothing to high-end functional motorcycle equipment for professional use. With the primary focus on showing exciting new products at Intermot, there was barely time to mention the notable success stories right across the board. More than 30,000 R 1200 GS and GS Adventure sales continue to keep this iconic model series right at the top of the adventure sports category, while an unprecedented 6,000 R nineT sales have put this innovative and unique custom boxer in the top five in the sales charts in the home market.Leaving the crowds of enthusiasts free to explore the vast BMW Motorrad display area featuring all the latest models, clothing, accessories and lifestyle items, Stephan Schaller signed off by thanking everyone for coming and reminding them of the brand's latest mission - to MAKE LIFE A RIDE.
