It’s going to be one of the biggest adventure motorcycling challenges ever attempted and you have the chance to join it, when the AMERICA² challenge kicks off in 2015. A total of 300,000 kilometres will be ridden through 22 countries over the course of a year by 30 teams from 20 nations riding just four BMW R 1200 GS Adventures…It’s arguably the biggest Pan-American challenge ever undertaken and it’s the brainchild of Spanish around-the-world motorcyclist, journalist and BMW Motorrad ambassador Gustavo Cuervo. In early 2006, Cuervo organised one of the most ambitious around-the-world rides ever seen – a unique relay ride involving four BMW R 1200 GS Adventure motorcycles, 120 riders and 30 stages across the globe. This latest project promises to be the most comprehensive journey through the Americas from north to south, and from south to north – from Alaska to Ushuaia and back again, riding all the American countries. Leaving from Miami next April, 30 teams of four riders will undertake stages ranging from 10-14 days, at the control of four R 1200 GS Adventures, exploring the entire continent on two wheels. It won’t all be riding though, as various activities, social and humanitarian projects en route will allow the different teams to explore and engage with the cultures, customs and people of the places they are passing through. In addition to Gustavo, the organisation team comprises some of the most respected adventure travellers, including Emilio Quesada, who has filled 16 passports in over a million miles of riding; Alicia Sornosa, who became the first Spanish woman to ride around the world on a BMW bike; and Emilio Scotto, whose Guinness World Record-setting ‘Longest Ride Around the World on a Motorcycle’ took him through 279 countries over 10 years. The entire trip will be filmed for a television series to be broadcast in Spain and Latin America as well as being communicated with daily video, text and photo updates to all the social networks, with the addition of live satellite tracking via Google. With just over six months to the start of this ambitious year-long ride on BMW Motorrad’s flagship continent-busting GS Adventure, Gustavo Cuervo is looking forward to sharing the excitement of participating in this historic ride with a global community of BMW GS enthusiasts.“We launched the registration for the 2015 AMERICA² trip at the recent Spanish BMW Motorrad Days event in Formigal and had a very good reception,” he said. “In the three days that followed, we had teams expressing interest from Spain, France, Germany, Romania, Chile, and Brazil, so I’m expecting the places to fill up quickly. It’s our mission to reach the greatest number of adventurers possible around the world and make this authentic Pan-American journey the trip of a lifetime for our relay riders on the new 1200 GS Adventure. Who wouldn’t want to explore parts of North, Central and South America and share the experience with riders from 20 different nationalities?”
